World Masterpiece Theatre Series were brought to an end after the last episode of ienaki ko REMI (Homeless girl Remi) ended on late March, 1997. The timeslot once occupied by the Series will be replaced by anime named "China Number One!" starting from April 27. This anime is completely different (in other words, not related to) from World Masterpiece Theatre.
Nippon Animation claimed that, however, they will host up the reinnovated series - New World Masterpiece Theatre (shin - sekai meisaku gekijyou) after a period of preparations, and be broadcast again in another timeslot.
Till now WMT series in Japan has been stopped for nearly a year and there are no signs of resuming it anymore. A Japanese has made a website for signing campaign, urging Fuji TV to rebroadcast WMT.
Please click below banner to go there and sign! He is making an English version so that non-Japanese can also participate. Anyway the page uses a large amount of Kanji (Chinese character) and you can guess what he means. Be reminded that you need a S-JIS code compatible viewer (like Unionway) to view Japanese kanji
Introduction:
It is the anime series once being run on Fuji TV in Japan from 1975 to end-March 1997 every Sunday 7:30PM, Japan time. Most units of the series are transcripted from famous children classics and fictions (that's why they call it "Masterpiece") except the 20th unit. The Series are produced by Nippon Animation Co., Ltd.
The picture below is the starting unit of the Series -- A Dog of Flanders (1975) (Hong Kong people, guess who the boy and the girl are, you will know what they are if you are old enough!).?
---
This picture is extracted from the cover of a CD single named "Yumeyo
towani - Remix of Main Theme Songs" by Nippon Columbia (CODC-713).
As a remix of opening themes of all 20 units, human charaters e.g. the
boy holding a trumpet (A Dog of Flanders) and animals once appeared
in the 20 units (e.g. white cat on the grey dog (Love's
tale of Young Grass, AKA. Little Women (1987)), a rascal holding
an apple (Racoon Rascal(1977)),etc) are used as the CD single cover.
The remix was sung by Horie Mitsuko.?
Celebrating the series' 20th anniversary, the first Japanese original-made unit called Tico of the Seven Seas was made in 1994. In 1995 It was broadcast in Hong Kong known as "Friends in the Deep Seas" by TVB within the time-zone of Flash Fax.
In 1995 the unit Romeo's Blue Sky was run in Japan and in 1996.
You will know more about the Series in the listings of Incomplete homepage of Ben Ettinger, which he collected handful informations about the series, the original author of each units and much more!
There is also Nippon Animation homepage in which you can find more information about their new project : The Dog of Flanders turned into movie and will be shown in Japan around February or March this year. (Please load S-JIS code viewer before surfing that page. All texts are in Japanese but don't be afraid. Many beautiful pictures, character configurations are waiting for you there!)

If you come to this page by Anime Web Ring, please also visit the AnimeNet main page. AnimeNet initially is a BBS echomail network in Hong Kong dedicated to discussions of Japanese Animations. The web server was set up in early 1997 for network users to put their favourite anime on the web. (Thanks for Alex and TWS who alloted me some server space to make this page!)
