In Christmas eve, March Girls gathered around their mother to read papa's letter from battlegrounds....

The picture above is extracted from a Japanese children anime picture book, so the characters above is the same as they appear in the anime.

During 1860s, when the American Civil War took place, the March family settled in Newcord, one of the cities near River Lawrence, Northen State. The story describes their daily lifes when their father is out for fighting. They struggle and strive to become mature and wise during the hardships.

Of course there were also times of happiness : Beth got her new piano from James Lawrence, grandpa of Laurie Lawrence (episode 23 onwards of the anime), Jo's article was posted on newspaper, etc.

The story came to its height when Beth caught scarlet fever and dying, but by miracles recovered in Chrismas eve next year. At the same time the father mother rushed back from New York in Chrismas day.
